Electric guitarから出力される基本周波数は、下図の様に一般的な22フレットのguitarの場合は、82.407Hz~1,174.659Hz (1.174kHz)と比較的低位に留まっていますが、スチール弦とネック、ボディ素材との共振により複雑な倍音(高調波)を生成します。更に、シンプルで古典的な(コイルと磁石で構成された) magnetic pick upは、非常に微妙なタッチも起電力する優れモノです。そこで、guitar ampの役割は、guitarから起電力された高調波を如何に魅力的な音色として増幅出音するか、と言う事ですが、それには、tone control回路やpresenceコントロール、サスティーンや歪高調波を付加するover drive回路等が重要になって来ます。各メーカーは、独自に意匠を凝らせた製品を発売していますが、特にMESA/Boogieは、新しいモデルを発表するごとに、意欲的にそれぞれの回路に工夫を凝らした変更を加味しています。

tone control回路は、Fender tone stackを基本に定数や構成に工夫が凝らされています。
over drive回路に関して、MESA/Boogieは不断の改良が加えられ、回路構成が重畳され、可動コントロール操作類が複雑多岐になって来ました。その結果、playerが扱い切れるかどうか危惧されますが?(尚、下図は一般に公表されている回路をまとめて作図したもので、回路や定数は必ずしも正確ではありません。概略俯瞰図として理解願います。)
